Under Construction: English

1. Introduction of the Work

Under Construction: English is a project that transforms everyday language mistakes into visual design. As a non-native English speaker living in the UK, I often mispronounce words or confuse letters. At the same time, translated signs in non-English-speaking countries also contain humorous errors. Instead of seeing these mistakes as failures, I treat them as material for creativity.

The project redesigns errors such as Parking → Rarking or Fog → Frog into a new set of signs. These signs look functional at first glance, but each one carries a playful twist that comes directly from the original mistake.

By enlarging, repeating, and visually reinterpreting these ‘wrong’ words, the project highlights how language constantly shifts in multilingual environments. The work suggests that English is not fixed or perfect, but something flexible, unstable, and always under construction.

Through a system of mock road signs, the project invites viewers to rethink linguistic correctness, and to appreciate how mistakes can become a space for humor, identity, and new meaning.
